Been a long time...

Gosh, I can’t believe it’s  been a month since my last update.  I am such a rubbish with this blogging thing.

The last month has been really difficult.  As the distances we go get higher, I get sorer and more grouchy towards the end of walks.  Poor Dave has to deal with it every other day!  J

I can’t believe that in my last post I was on to my first 5-mile walk.  Now, my short walks are more like 6!  On Sunday, we did a 10¾ -mile walk and, while it was sore, I managed it!  On Friday we’re moving on to 12 miles… approaching half way to 26.2!  It’s a bit scary that I’ve only got 2 months left and I’m only halfway… fingers crossed I won’t collapse on the night!

I'm starting to fundraise in earnest now - please donate if you can!  I would be very grateful!

Ooops

I haven't written anything in ages... my bad!  Things have been so busy (visa application malarkey and starting a new job) that it has just slipped my mind!

Walking has been going well.  Dave comes with me on most walks and the lovely Kat (who's also doing the Moonwalk!) comes with us on Wednesdays for a 4-mile walk around Arthur's Seat.  It's really great to have walking companions as a) it passes the time and b) removes the temptation to take shortcuts!!

When I do go alone, though, I put on my "cheesy crap" playlist which keeps me going...  My morale is still pretty high, and whenever I don't feel like walking I just keep reminding myself how good it will feel to cross the finish line!

So last weekend I had my first 5 mile walk - we went through Stockbridge and Dean Village, which was very scenic, though hilly...  This weekend is the dreaded 6 mile walk, which I'm planning on taking through Bruntsfield, Morningside and around the Southside.  At least there won't be the bloody steep hills of Dean Village!

Week 2... and onto week 3!

So week two was just fine... I graduated onto 3 miles and I worked my time down from doing 3 miles in an hour to 3 miles in 47 minutes.  Nice!  I'm hoping to get faster on my feet.  I find that music helps, which reminds me?

HAS ANYONE GOT GOOD WORKOUT TUNES?  Comment below... :-)

I was supposed to incorporate swimming into my routine but I just couldn't get up in time to get to the pool so I'll wait til next week to start (I'm off work so it will be easier...?)

This weekend will see the start of my 4 mile walks, so I'm planning on going around Arthur's Seat.  That route's good as it's hilly and that means even more exercise!

The walks are still short enough where I'm not feeling knackered.  Not looking forward to the 6+ mile walks to come though!

It begins...

I’ve done it!  I’ve entered to do the Edinburgh Moonwalk!  26.2 miles in the middle of the night, walking in a bra.  Good lord, what have I let myself in for?!

It’s for a good cause, though: breast cancer awareness.  I’m walking in memory of my mother and best friend, Jan Mucka, who passed away in 2002 from cancer.  I always liked the idea of completing a sporting event to aid a cancer charity and honour the memory of Mom, but I never got off my lazy backside to actually enter!  So my thanks (or possibly blame when the blisters start…) go out to my friend Becca, who suggested we enter the Moonwalk this year and spurred me into action!

So I’m going to use this blog to track my process, air my frustrations, share my victories and generally post the type of exercise crap I wish (and, to be fair, everyone wishes) would stay off the Facebook newsfeed.  It’s my way of “getting a room” (but you know, still read it if you want, or not, it’s cool…).

I’m nearly done with Week 1 training, which was just a 2-mile walk every other day.  I managed to source some good-quality running shoes, which have greatly improved my gait (and rid me of my niggling pains here, there and everywhere) so I’m ready for Week 2 to start!

I’m trying to raise £1,946, which seems like a completely arbitrary and, some might say, exorbitant amount.  True, it’s a lofty goal, but Mom was born in 1946 and it seemed fitting to have that as my fundraising goal.  That, or I’ve sat through too many marketing classes.  I would be so grateful to receive donations, which can be made here:

Wish me luck!
